[this kindly-looking old man is talking to himself out loud in the marketplace as he examines the seafood. he's probing at the selection gently as he searches for something that meets whatever his specifications are. but if you stand around long enough, you'll probably find out: he seems to have no trouble speaking what's on his mind to all and sundry.]

Reagents, acquired. Next . . . ah! Brain food, that's the ticket. None of that newfangled processed or instant food, something fresh. Now I suppose for a proper calamari, I'll need flour, a binding agent or simply some eggs, and a octopus with enough limbs and flesh to be tasty. And a cleaver would not go amiss. Ah, and a container to fry in, like a dutch oven, and some oil and a skimmer. Well, assuming that the octopuses here are the same as back home, that is. Perhaps not such a stretch . . . although the way things are going, well! I should hope I don't accidentally find a sentient one. Although they could be good company at dinner.
