But what that something was he could only begin to guess at. He'd seen similar ionic disturbances before, but without knowing what the nebula was made from, what the ship's were made from, what they used for propulsion, coolant, even the frequency of their shield harmonics, there was very little point in trying to establish the source--or the risk. A guess was still a guess, even if it came from a place of great experience; it simply became a better guess.

A particularly bright bolt snapped between one of the clouds and the nearest ship. There didn't seem to be any damage, but there was no doubt the storm was worsening.

"Do you have any theories?"
